Acid reflux affects millions of patients each year. It is called gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD. Most people call it heartburn. Some foods that cause heartburn are coffee, colas, carbonateddrinks, chocolate, alcohol, fatty and fried foods. Other causes are medications, smoking, obesity, hiatal hernia and pregnancy. Besides the typical burning sensation most people experience, you can have hoarseness, persistent cough, a feeling of a "lump in your throat," or a constant need to clear your throat.

Dental symptoms are erosions of the teeth at the gum line,a loss of the enamel on the biting surface of your teeth,or an increased sensitivity of your teeth. An increase in your decay rate without any changes in diet or oral hygiene.

You need a doctor to provide a diagnosis because these symptoms could be related to another disease.

A sour, bitter, or metallic taste in your mouth is typically due to the acid leaking into your throat. This acid will change the pH of your saliva and start the decay process. So besides the irritation of the heartburn, you could get a cavity from not treating your acid reflux disease.
