Dentistry's understanding of decay has changed over the past several years. Mom always taught you to avoid sweets and brush your teeth. This does not work for everyone.

Decay is now considered a pH disease. PH is a value of the acid-base balance. The normal pH of the saliva is between 6.8 and 7.0 which is near neutral. As the pH drops, enamel and dentin will start to demineralize, thus starting the decay process. The demineralization can be reversed if we understand how to remineralize.

First there are four sources of acid:

1. bacteria

2. diet

3. acid reflux

4. xerostomia (dry mouth)

If we control the acid attacks we can decrease the chances of decay progressing to the point of needing treatment.

I will address each area in future blogs. So if interested view my future blogs. Thanks Dr Burnell
