The recent FOX news report regarding benign brain tumors and bitewing x-rays is another example of poor reporting. The research they referred to is flawed. They used data based on 1960's x-ray machines and x-ray film that required long exposures and high dosages. Also, they used patients memories to establish what x-rays they had taken when they were children. Today we use digital x-rays that use 20 - 25% of the radiation of conventional films. I reviewed the American Dental Association's paper on this research and nowhere is it stated that the recommendation of bitewings should only be every 2 - 3 years. This research does not account for cell phone radiation, microwaves, enviromental radiation, genetics, lifestyle, medical history, tobacco and alcohol use. How this research got established is questionable.
